Establishment of the Caerphilly 50+ Forum
A local Strategy for Older People (COPS) has been developed by Caerphilly County Borough Council within the context of the National Strategy for Older People in Wales first published by the Welsh Assembly Government in January 2003. The strategies are aimed at ensuring that people aged 50+ are seen as active contributors to their communities, as well as being service users. The four key themes of the National Strategy are: 1. Valuing Older People. 2. A Changing Society. 3. Living Longer and Healthier Lives. 4. Coping with Increasing Dependency: Housing, Social Care, and Health.
Caerphilly CBC have established a multi-agency Older People’s Strategy Implementation Group (OPSIG) which meets regularly to progress implementation of the strategy and its action plan.

Initial meetings of people aged 50+ were organised by Caerphilly CBC during 2004 to establish the desire for a 50+ Forum. As a result of these meetings a 50+ Steering Group of volunteers was established in November 2004. The Steering Group is represented on the OPSIG and various other relevant groups working with Caerphilly CBC.
The 50+ Steering Group has met regularly since its formation and led to a launch meeting an independent Caerphilly 50+ Forum on 18th April 2005. The Steering Group continues to meet on a regular monthly basis and 50+ Forum meetings are held every two months.
The Caerphilly 50+ Forum works closely with Caerphilly CBC but is a totally independent forum run by volunteer members aged 50+ resident in the Caerphilly Borough area.
